Rehabilitation of Demerara Light House to commence shortly

To provide proper guidance at night to river vessels, the Ministry of Public Works and Communications will be rehabilitating the Demerara Light House, Kingston.
The rehabilitation will commence next week and the contractor is currently expediting preliminary works, Chief Building Officer of the Ministry of Public Works and Communications, Alvin Thorne, has stated.

Thorne noted that the contract to rehabilitate this landmark which towers 103 feet above the high water mark over Water Street was awarded to Andre Howard Construction Services for the sum of $11,074,025.
He highlighted that the rehabilitative works involve the repairing and painting of walls, metal works and stairs. In addition all facilities and furnishings will be upgraded and the external areas and immediate environs will be improved.
Minister of Transport and Hydraulics, Robeson Benn, earlier this year, during his presentation of the 2009 review of the Ministry’s performance, highlighted that this structure will be rehabilitated.
