DENNERY, St Lucia (CMC) – Steady bowling all-round helped Windward Islands collect first innings points from Trinidad & Tobago in the TCL Group West Indies Under-19 Challenge yesterday. T&T, replying to Windwards’ first innings total of 236, were dismissed for 216 in the first hour after tea on the second day of their second round match at the Dennery Playing Field.
Dwight Smith then hit an unbeaten 44, as Windwards reached 60 for one in their second innings at the close to extend their lead to 80.
Smith struck four fours and one six in his innings, but he lost fellow opener Atticus Brown for 15 in the final half-hour, when he was caught off Yanick Cariah.
Earlier, Cariah struck half-dozen boundaries in the top score of 52 from 81 balls in just over 1 ½ hours, as T&T’s batsmen failed to find their rhythm in-between showers that swiped a large chunk of the day.
Resuming on 52 for three, rain hampered play before lunch, and T&T crawled to 106 for four at the interval.
T&T lost Keiron Joseph bowled by Windwards’ captain Audy Alexander for 44 just before lunch.
After the interval, the rain continued to disrupt T&T’s innings, and they reached 182 for eight at tea.
During the period, their captain Yanick Ottley was adjudged lbw with a duck shortly after lunch, Levaughan Lewis bowled Akeal Hosein for 27, before Rudolph Paul removed Cariah and Derone Davis for 16 in quick succession.
After tea, T&T limped over the 200-run threshold, and their tail-enders appeared willing to make a fight of it, but the Windwards kept their nerve, and the visitors fell short.
Hodge was the most successful Windwards bowler with three wickets for 79 runs from 24 overs, while Paul and Lewis ended with two wickets apiece.
T&T entered the match tied for second with Barbados on six points, and Windwards were tied for fourth with Jamaica on three points.
T&T drew with the Jamaicans in the opening round, when the Windwards had a similar result against the Barbadians.
