BK group of companies has rejected reports carried in some sections of the media on the Haags Bosch landfill site which it said is scheduled to be delivered in January next year and accuses several newspapers of giving a false impression of the timing of the delivery of the project.
A press release issued by the company said: “The BK Group of Companies wishes to correct reports published in the Guyana Times of Sunday, 11th July headlined “Haags Bosch landfill delayed for three months” and the Sunday Stabroek News of 11th July headlined “New garbage challenge hits city as Haags Bosch landfill pushed back two months” and in the Kaieteur News, which give an entirely false impression that the Contractor is behind on the delivery of the contract.”
“In fact, BK International Inc., in association with Puran Brothers Disposal Services, are contracted to deliver this contract on 15th January, 2011, and this is clearly stated in a Press Release of 10th July, 2010 issued by the Project Manager, Mr. Walter Willis, on behalf of the Georgetown Solid Waste Management Programme, upon which these reports are based.”
“In a meeting between BK International and the Project Manager on 25th May, 2010, the Project Manager sought the assistance of the Contractor to accelerate the project to allow for start-up of the landfill operations at the Haags Bosch site by 1st August, 2010. It is clear from the Minutes of that meeting, that while the Contractor undertook to assist, if possible, in meeting the request of the Government’s Project Implementation Unit, the Contractor’s obligation for delivery and operation of the landfill continue to be January 2011.”
The release added that unfortunately, materials which are vital for the construction of the landfill and essential for any acceleration of the Project, have been delayed through no fault of the Contractor. Further delays may, however, result if the duty free concessions for these materials applied for since January 2010 and approved by the Solid Waste Management Programme, continue to wait approval by the Guyana Revenue Authority.
BK International said that the Guyana Times, Stabroek News and Kaieteur News should have consulted with the contractor, as might be expected of responsible news media, prior to the publications of these misleading reports.
