Unlikely Mr. Jagdeo will run for a third term

I believe it is highly unlikely that Mr. Jagdeo would run for a third term as President of Guyana.  Not only is it not provided for under the constitution of this country, but for the constitution to be changed to allow such a thing, the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) would need a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly for a constitutional reform, which they do not have. Of course the only way this can become a reality is for the party to work out some sort of an arrangement with the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and Mr. Corbin, who has already stated his position where this is concerned.
As far as I and the rest of the population are aware, the PPP/C is still in the throes of trying to decide on a Presidential Candidate for the 2011 General Elections.  So the media would have us believe because the party has not decided on a candidate as yet, still a year away from the elections, that the logical choice is for President Jagdeo to be the candidate in 2011.  Even if Jagdeo becomes a Presidential candidate, he still has to present himself to 2011 elections process where he will have to compete with other candidates. So what is the big deal?
This is a stretch if ever there was one.  The PNCR has still not announced who their candidate will be, and what with Mr. Corbin’s announcement a few months back that he intends to remain at the helm of the party. Although he probably would not be the party’s candidate in 2011, there is still much confusion in that camp as to who will submit himself/herself as poster boy or girl and nothing else for the PNCR’s participation in the 2011 elections.
