CHAIRMAN of Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Mr. Alli Baksh has announced that a Regional Drainage and Irrigation Board will be established to look into problems and other issues affecting the system. Addressing rice farmers at a public meeting, in Anna Regina Town Hall, he, recently, said they will be asked to name representatives from the North and South of Essequibo Coast and Water Users Association (WUA) on the 16-member body.
Baksh said Rice Producers Association (RPA) and Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) officers will be also be on the new D&I Board.
Some 32,500 acres are cultivated on Essequibo Coast for each crop and several planters are destroying Government D&I structures in the haste to get irrigation water for their lands, without following instructions from the authority that oversees the distribution from conservancies to canals and trenches, he stated.
