Maintenance works ongoing on road lights

ELECTRICAL maintenance works on the road lights are ongoing and Mr. Nigel Erskine, Road and Safety Engineer in the Ministry Public Works and Communication, said satisfactory progress is being made. He explained that there are five one year such contracts for the upkeep of the street lights infrastructure. Four were awarded to Cummings Electrical and the other to Bardon Contracting, all costing $21.9M.
Erskine said Cummings is responsible for in and around Georgetown, through to Mahaica, East Coast Demerara; Rosignol, West Bank Berbice  and Essequibo, which cost $4M, $5.1M, $4.9M and $2.3M, respectively.
Bardon, for $5.6M, covers the lights along the East Bank Demerara corridor.
Erskine said, when the awards were made, there was a backlog of work to be done but that was cleared and routine works are now being undertaken once monthly.
“When other issues arise, like in the case of an accident, the contractors also respond,” he said.
Erskine said, lately, however, the increased spate of accidents has posed a challenge.
