Government is advancing its mandate to reduce poverty among women in Guyana by providing funding for training in areas of Information Technology and Office Procedure for underprivileged and single parent women. The training programme, which bears the theme; “Building Capacity for Skills Advancement”, was organised by the Guyana Women’s Leadership Institute (GWLI) of the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security, and will be launched by Minister of Labour Manzoor Nadir at the Kwakwani Primary School, Region 10 on July 12.
According to a press from the Ministry, the training programme provides a medium through which the Ministry is able to fulfill its mandate of reducing poverty among underprivileged and single parent women. It is also able to fulfill its international mandates to the Convention on the Elimination on all Forms of Discrimination (CEDAW) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDG).
The Ministry, through the institute, has extended the programmes to hinterland and rural communities so as to allow women in those communities the same opportunity as those who benefit from the residential programme at the GWLI, Cove and John, East Coast Demerara.
Among the prospective beneficiaries would be women who are community leaders who will be provided with knowledge and skills to manage groups or individual businesses.
The training programme is the fulfillment of a promise made by Minister Nadir during a visit to Kwakwani on May 22, as part of a Cabinet outreach in Region 10, where he committed to making the training available to the women in that community.
The programme will be conducted during the period July 12 to September 3, 2010, after which participants who would have completed the training will receive certificates in the respective areas. (GINA)
