GMRP reminds of penalties for mangroves destruction

After Enmore incident…
GUYANA Mangrove Restoration Project (GMRP) has warned that persons will be prosecuted if the laws protecting mangrove forests are breached.
The warning followed a report, by public-spirited citizens Thursday evening, of mangrove cutting at Enmore foreshore, East Coast Demerara.
Under the Sea Defence Act of 1998, destruction of mangrove forests is punishable by a fine of $12,000 and 12 months imprisonment.
The amended Forestry Act 2010 also stipulates penalties for destroying mangroves.
According to GMRP Coordinator, Mr. Bissasar Chintamanie, a visit was paid to the Enmore site but the perpetrators were not apprehended.
He said a report was made to the Police and lauded the Enmore resident who reported the incident.
Chintamanie said such public-spiritedness should be emulated countrywide as much work is being advanced to protect, manage and restore mangroves in Guyana.
Persons aware of mangroves being destroyed are asked to telephone numbers 220-2841, 220-2842 or 220-2843.
