Manslaughter accused granted bail on drug charges

MANSLAUGHTER accused Wazim Mohammed, 23, who is also charged with drug trafficking was granted bail Tuesday, in the total sum of $750,000, on a petition to Acting Chief Justice Ian Chang.
The previously remanded prisoner faces two counts of possession of cannabis (marijuana) for the purpose and one charge of cultivating a prohibited plant.

He was denied pre-trial liberty when made his initial Court appearance before a magistrate and pleaded not guilty.
It was alleged that he had 30 kilogrammes of the narcotic during a Police raid along Berbice River, on June 1, to conduct drug eradication exercise at Gate Roy.
In a sworn affidavit, the petitioner on behalf of Mohammed, his aunt, Nashmoon Ramsarran, of Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, said her nephew worked on a farm where corn and banana are cultivated by his employer known as ‘Strong Man’, now wanted by the Police.
Justice Chang set surety at $375,000 on each of the two charges.
Meanwhile Mohammed still has a pending indictment for the manslaughter of Russell Nelson, a 62-year-old pensioner and part time security guard.
At a Berbice Assizes trial, before Justice Claudette La Bennett on April 14, 2009, the jury, after hearing the evidence of  17 witnesses and deliberating for more than three hours, failed to reach a verdict and the judge ordered a retrial. (Jeune Bailey Vankeric)
