Human rights, other groups silent on cop killing

– Senior Police officer
COLLEAGUES of slain cop Vickram Singh have noted the silence from local human rights and other groups compared to their vociferous positions against alleged excesses by policemen in the course of duty.
Police Constable 20740 Vickram Singh of the Tactical Services Unit was shot and killed Friday night while on duty at the entrance to the Joint Services Housing Scheme at Lamaha Springs, Georgetown.
He was slain as he tried to stop a robbery attempt near his post.
Some of his fellow cops said they would have expected some form of condemnation of the killing from human rights groups and others who are usually quick to mount street and other protests after incidents involving the police.
“The lives of members of the Police Force are on the line every day and we have not heard any expression of sympathy or concern at the killing of Constable Singh”, an officer said.
The officer made reference to last Sunday’s incident in which the police were shot at in East Ruimveldt while in search for wanted man ‘Cobra’ forcing them to return fire at two men who they were able to eventually capture.
Police said Singh observed the attempted robbery and responded when he was shot by an armed man who fled.
A police patrol in the area responded and gave chase in the direction where the assailant was suspected to have gone and several houses in the area were also searched, but the gunman was not found.
Constable Singh was rushed to the Davis Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical treatment.
