Fire investigations continuing but…
THE situation at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, at Lot 132 Parade Street, Kingston, Georgetown, is almost back to normal after the disastrous May fire, according to Assistant Administrator, Mrs. Marjorie Park. She said several meetings were held to address the rebuilding effort at one of the premiere health care delivery institutions, where the destruction spawned offices of private doctors, the emergency room, the admissions and discharge section, the nursing service area, one of two operating theatres and some medical records.
Park told the Guyana Chronicle that 20 nurses graduated, yesterday, from the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Nursing School and it was testimony to the fact that the institution is continuing, as best as possible, to maintain it regular routine.
She said most of the graduates will remain but, sometimes, some choose to go elsewhere.
Park said the hospital is, presently, making available all the services that were previously offered.
“The Emergency Room is functioning and, as of this week Tuesday, the operating theatre began working. We had surgeries done up to today (yesterday),” she said.
Park said the out-patient services were only disrupted on the day of the blaze and the in-patient services are not being utilised to capacity, as happened previously.
She reported that the number of in-patients are not as many as before but the full use of the beds is dependent on the maximum functionality of the emergency and operating rooms.
Meanwhile, investigations into what caused the conflagration are still ongoing. (V. Narine)
