UG launches ‘Donate a Tree’ project

THE symbolic planting of two palm trees on the grounds of its Turkeyen Campus on Thursday marked the launching of the University of Guyana (UG)’s ‘Donate a Tree’ project.
Patron of the Project, Ms. Pamela Bourne, who is a key member of the Barbados Horticultural Society, said at the event that she wanted to improve the physical beauty of the landscape, and that the quality of the environment has an important bearing on how we see life.
Noting that trees are symbolic of life itself, Bourne said they often outlast those who plant them and serve as a committement to those who come after.
With reference to response to the project, she said it was rather impressive, with donations coming from businesses, alumni, previous staff members and other interested parties.
UG Vice-Chancellor, professor Lawrence Carrington praised the project, and expressed  his willingness to work with nature and take advantage of the fertile soil.
The Guyana Forestry Commission furnished a layout of the campus, showing existing trees and spots where new trees will be planted for the project.
