THE Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara) Department of Education has announced that remedial classes for pupils in grades 2, 3, 4 would begin on July 12 at 33 centres across the Region.
According to Regional Literacy Coordinator, Mr. Senarine Bhukan, the programme caters for pupils who have fallen below the expected standard in reading and numeracy. He said that 589 Grade 2, 554 Grade 3 and 600 Grade 4 pupils would benefit from the four week programme which begins at 9:00 h and ends at 12:00 h each day, Monday to Thursday.
Approximately 116 teachers would lend their expertise to what he described as an exciting and fun filled programme during the August vacation. Continuing, he said that 15 pupils would be assigned to a teacher and each teacher would receive a stipend of $30,000 for the four-week period. Pupils would receive a mid-morning snack he said.
Teachers who would have been selected to deliver on the programme would participate in a one day workshop at the Malgre Tout Primary School on Monday June 28 and Friday July 2, at the Greenwich Park School.
Bhukan said that the objective of the workshop is to expose teachers to the contents and methodologies which would be used during the remediation programme.
Bhukan said resource personnel for the workshops would be drawn from the National Literacy Unit and the Regional Department of Education.
