‘Human torch’ attempted murder trial nearing end

Pathologist to testify today
SENIOR Government Pathologist, Dr. Nehaul Singh, who performed the post mortem examination on the body of  Pearline Cunja, will testify at the  attempted murder trial which continues at the Demerara Assizes this morning.

Pathologist Singh, the last witness to testify for the prosecution, was out of Guyana and retuned recently  only to be confronted with  a long list of bodies awaiting for post mortems to be carried out which left him unavailable to the court until today.

The accused, Dilip Lambert, was charged with attempted murder of his wife Pearline Cunja  on the night of October  21, 2007.

According to the prosecution, led by Miss Rhondel Weever in association with Miss Latchmie Rahamat, the accused is reported to have thrown a lighted kerosene stove on his wife, which caused her death from burns some  days later.

On the other hand, the accused had told the police that his wife was burnt accidentally while in the process of cooking, when a defective kerosene stove flared up and set her clothing afire.

The accused had further told the police  that he also suffered burns on his lower arms which he received while trying to  put out the fire on his blazing wife.

A police witness testified that he had taken the accused to hospital for medical attention for burns received.

Following the doctor’s ceremony this morning, the accused is expected to be called upon for a defence.

The defence and the prosecution lawyers will also address the jury after which the judge will sum  up the case to the jury before handing it over to  them for  their consideration and verdict.

Further hearing continues today before Justice Roxanne George and a mixed jury.
