— PPP says it remains unbeatable coalition
THE governing People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) says it remains an unbeatable coalition while the opposition People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and Alliance For Change (AFC) are deeply split over leadership issues.
The PPP/C was formed as an alliance between the PPP and civic groups for the historic October 5, 1992 elections, which marked Guyana’s restoration of democracy, and has remained firm for some 18 years while several coalition attempts by the PNCR and AFC have failed.
In a statement yesterday, the PPP noted that PNCR leader, Mr. Robert Corbin, had attributed press reports about rumours of discussions in opposition circles in reference to coalition politics, to the party.
“The PPP had made no comment on that issue at the time Mr. Corbin made his remarks”, it said.
“Indeed, it is clear that the opposition is panicking because of the divisions in their ranks. It is no secret that Mr. Corbin himself was challenged many times for the leadership of his party. The AFC is also deeply split over leadership issues”, the PPP noted.
Moreover, it said, the level of deception of some of the opposition leaders is now coming to the fore.
The PPP recalled that only recently, AFC leader, Mr. Raphael Trotman swore that he would not have any unity with the PNCR.
“He had even denied talking with that party. That position was first refuted by Mr. Corbin himself who castigated Mr. Trotman for denying that talks were ongoing between them”, the PPP noted.
“Both the PNCR and AFC have a lot of persons who are disillusioned with their leadership and this must be the reason for the panic that is sweeping through the ranks of those parties.
The PPP/Civic alliance has defeated the PNCR in the past. What we see happening in the opposition is just a shuffling of cards”, it said.
“The PPP/C is a strong and mature coalition capable of defeating the opposition in whatever form they may present themselves”, it declared.
