Church burglary defendant refused bail

A MAN charged with committing a burglary at Carmel Seventh-Day Adventist Church was yesterday remanded to prison, by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
Michael Deonarine, 28, pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which said, between June 9 and 10, he broke and entered the place of worship and stole 24 rolls of toilet tissue, valued $3,000, together with two rolls of paper towels priced at $2,000.

The defendant said he was walking along a road when two men, who were standing in front of the church, asked him to help them carry the merchandise.
Deonarine (no address given) claimed he was helping the men when the Police arrested him.
But he admitted that he was previously sentenced to two months imprisonment for theft.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, successfully objected to bail for the defendant and said he was nabbed with the booty at the scene of the crime.
Deonarine has to be back in Court on July 13.
