by 163 runs in first Test
PORT-OF-SPAIN, (Reuters)-Dale Steyn claimed three for 65 as South Africa completed an emphatic 163-run win over West Indies after just four days of the first Test in Trinidad and Tobago
While Steyn took three wickets, Morne Morkel and Paul Harris both claimed two as the visitors tore through the hosts’ batting line-up, bowling them out for 293.
The Proteas had earlier started the day by extending their 155 for two to 206 for four before declaring with the winning target at an unlikely 457.
They struck early in the Windies’ second innings, with Travis Dowlin making just a single, but the hosts had some hope as long as Gayle was at the crease.
He made 73 in typically bullish fashion before Morkel had him lbw to raise South African hopes of an early finish with the scoreboard reading 139 for four at the break.
Morkel had started the ball rolling by trapping Dowlin leg before with the score on just two before Steyn and wicketkeeper Mark Boucher combined to see off Brendan Nash for 13.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul was the next man in and he played out 48 balls for his 15 before Jacques Kallis had him caught at slip by AB de Villiers but it was Gayle’s departure, after a 106-ball stay that included nine fours and a six over long-on off Morkel, that represented the biggest blow.
Sulieman Benn and Shane Shillingford put up strong resistance, sharing a stand of 66 for the eighth wicket with the former out for 42 to herald the beginning of the end.
Shillingford went before Nelon Pascal was bowled by Steyn to signal the end of the match.
The day had started brightly for Gayle’s side, who dismissed Kallis without adding to his overnight 40 and then claimed the wicket of Graeme Smith 10 short of his century.
