The body of a new born, full term baby boy was discovered yesterday afternoon floating in a canal in the vicinity of Cowan and Water Streets, Kingston, Georgetown, by several school children.
The gruesome discovery was made at about 13:00 hrs by a group of students from the nearby Kingston Practical Instruction Centre, who were on their lunch break.
According to an employee of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC), Paul Samuels, the children told him that a baby was in the canal but he did not believe them at first, and after they insisted, he went across the road to check, and there he saw a bag with the body parts of the baby hanging out.
The Sluice Attendant added that he opened the koker then realised that the bag was heavy and even noticed that it was a body. When the bag reached close to the koker, he pulled it out.
He had earlier opened the koker to let water out but did not see anything and was surprised at first when the children told him about the baby.
After the baby was pulled from the canal, a crowd had gathered to get a glimpse of the decomposing corpse, which they said might have been in the water for at least two days.
