THE Guyana Police Force wishes to respond to an article published in the Kaieteur News on Wednesday June 02, 2010, under the caption “Friends brutalised, dumped in lockups”.
The article dealt with allegations being made by Colin Jack and Fabian Levius that they were assaulted by police ranks on Sunday May 30, 2010 while at the Aziza Akouza Resort, Soesdyke/Linden Highway. They claimed that this resulted after they were mistaken for a man known as ‘Cobra’ who was wanted by the police and that they were forced to remain overnight in the lockups and were released on the Monday afternoon.
The Police Force anti-crime unit is currently pursuing a gang headed by a man known only as ‘Cobra’.
Acting on information received that a motor car which is used by ‘Cobra’ was at the Aziza Akouza Resort, a team of police ranks then proceeded to that location on Sunday May 30, 2010.
Upon arrival the ranks saw three men and a woman in the motor car and ordered them out of the vehicle. The woman was released while the police attempted to arrest the three men for questioning, based on their being in the car used by ‘Cobra’. The men began to pull and tug with the police and a scramble ensued during which they received minor injuries.
A confrontation was held between the men namely Colin Jack, 37 years of Tucville, Georgetown; Fabian Levius, 31 years of West Ruimveldt, Georgetown; and Mark Hukumchand, 25 years of D’Urban Street, Georgetown, and the police ranks at the Timehri Police Station yesterday Thursday June 3, 2010. They agreed to an amicable settlement during which the three men accepted apologies from all of the police ranks and requested no further police action in the matter.
