-proceeds go to charity
GUYANA’S first world champion Andrew ‘Six Head’ Lewis, along with national cricketers Steven Jacobs and Leon Johnson, two former West Indies youth captains along with other local celebrities, will be in action at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) on Saturday in a specially organized Celebrity basketball game.
This fund raising event which is being organized by the newly formed Fire Basketball Club and being headed by Kester Gomes a former junior basketball player will see all proceeds  going towards charity, with the Joshua Children Centre and the host club being the beneficiaries.
According to Gomes, he saw the need to involve all local celebrities whether it is entertainment or sports in this game, as there is a dire need for assistance to the numerous charity homes in Guyana.
“With all the other avenues being utilized with respect to raising funds through basketball, namely Inter-ward and club, we thought it was best to use our local celebrities to tap into funds not only for the newly formed club but as well as for the Children’s home.
Giftland Officemax has already signaled their intentions to partner with us, while we are exercising other avenues in corporate Guyana to come on board, as we seek to make this venture a successful one” stated Gomes.
An admission fee of $1,000 will be charged to patrons desirous of witnessing the action which bounces off at 17:00h, with jump ball in the Celebrity game set for 20:30h.
According to Gomes, there will be two other matches being played prior to the feature event, with the University of Guyana led by Rudy James and Hugh Arthur, taking on a Media team which includes Gomes, Rawle Toney, Kiev Chesney and Yannick December in the first match.
The second match can be called a battle of the banks, as the Bank of Nova Scotia will be facing their counterparts from Republic Bank.
Amongst the celebrities set to compete apart from Lewis, Jacobs and Johnson is former middle distance queen Lorrie Ann Adams, Caribbean squash queen Nicollette Fernandes, national defender Howard Lowe and his Alpha Football Club teammate Ronson Williams.
