I must take umbrage at an electronic media, channel 9, which Tuesday evening’s telecast was a perfect example of reporting imbalance. The segment was on the recent gruesome stabbing death of a young West Demerara woman, who it is alleged was the victim of a hired assassin, compliments of her reputed husband.
In the telecast, much emphasis was placed on the hired gun’s attorney’s allegation that he had been physically abused by the police in the proceedings leading up to a formal charge of murder being made against him. I was shocked at the lengthy air time that was given to this complaint. My understanding of media matters is that balance is an absolute that ought to be adhered to at all times. Surely, that news report was a clear monopoly, and one sided, that was made without due regard to the sensibilities of relatives of the deceased. What about the latter who have suffered anguish at the brutal slaying of their young relative? Who is highlighting their grief?
Channel 9 can do much better. They are capable of a much higher standard of journalism.
