GUYANA has been witnessing its fair share of crime over the last ten years. This we know only too well, and therefore no debate is really needed here, except to say that the joint services have been defending the rights of law abiding Guyanese citizens, in a commendable manner. They have scored many victories over the many armed gangs. Thus it is fair to conclude that the local lawmen are in control of the local crime scene. But it is to the naysayers on which attention must be focused. The regular guys who are always saying NO to any positive development in this country.
As far as these Dr NOs are concerned, Guyana is the most dangerous state in the world; a place where all manner of crimes occur. It is as if the Guyana Police Force does not exist or are incapable. Now readers, you judge for yourself, though I dislike making this comparison with a sister Caricom state.
I am certain that ALL are familiar with the frightening culture of the crime scene in Jamaica, so much so that that isle has the unflattering stamp as one of the world’s murder capitals. The tally from the daily death toll there is utterly frightening and numbing. There, the criminal guns from the 326 gangs rule and the body count is astronomical. The Constabulary Force indeed seems impotent. Definitely, the criminal is king of that unfortunate isle. Currently, the hired guns of a most wanted, dangerous crime lord are battling against the armed forces of that island.
For all the criminal challenges that Guyana have faced, such a nightmare, as outlined above, has not been our experience. I wonder whether the naysayers are observing? Yes, they are! And they are being contradicted as well! But these political naysayers do have their agenda. Theirs are to continuously promote tidings of negativity, when the landscape has positively changed.
Truly, Guyana is still a much safer land in which to dwell.
Guyana still a much safer land
