THERE is a new trend here. A number of people who have nothing to contribute are now trying to find their place in Guyanese history by throwing dirt while hiding behind the stature and reputation of Cheddi Jagan. Churaumanie Bissundyal is the latest person to abuse this association.
I am fully prepared to grant Bissundyal his claim that he ‘grew up in the political orchard of a heroic man’, and this, despite the fact that top Jaganites here do not share that view.
‘Those days’, says the poet and critic, ‘…had healthy men of intellect, class, personality, grace, decency, reservation, mercy, forgiveness and sympathy.’
Now let us look at some class, decency, grace, et cetera, in the writings of Churaumanie Bissundyal.
Here is the man in his own words – “…there are strident sighs of whining, driving, and exploding in [my] piece, a lewd vehemence to defend the rakshasa (demon) that tries to kill the moon and eat babies at night.” What a wonderful demonstration of grace and reservation!
The man moans that his statements are not wild and irresponsible, but read the following quotation from him and then make up your own minds. Here is the graceful and responsible Bissundyal in his own words – “Today in Guyana we have no such men, save corrupt men who are immersed in the inferno of violence and thievery; men like rabid and hungry dogs hunting…” What a beautiful rendition of decency and personality!
Let us take a look at intellect. Here is Bissundyal’s exciting intellect at work – “In my opinion, every Indian in Guyana is a bewitched, blinded or terrorised into accepting the foul and filthy drama in Guyana.”
This man knows what guides the judgment and behavior of EVERY Indian in Guyana. What intellectual modesty; what an exceptional articulation of caution in his claims and propositions!
How about forgiveness? Let us cull some wisdom on this score from the poet/critic himself. Here he is – “I must divulge this: today in the government’s camp are many East Indians who were the terrier dogs in the PNC government, men who did work that defies all the beliefs of Cheddi Jagan.”
The heights of forgiveness reached here have never been possible even in the dreams of the great poets of the world. Incidentally, what exactly is being divulged here?
We should not leave out class because that is one ‘value’ adored by Churaumanie. Here is a show of class – [I] “…will say anything for [my] bread and butter. Classy; real class.
I can tell Bissundyal the following, for sure. If Dr. Cheddi Jagan was alive today, he would have scolded you for writing the stuff you write. What you are writing would have shamed him.
