Minibus driver charged with causing death by dangerous driving

The minibus driver involved in the horrific road accident recently on the Rupert Craig Highway was yesterday remanded to prison by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson for causing death by dangerous driving.
Bhagwandeen Budhram, 34, of 14 Lusignan Pasture, East Coast Demerara,
was not required to plead to the charge, which sated that on May 28, at Rupert Craig Highway, he drove minibus BKK 2686 in a manner dangerous to the public and caused the death of  Arvin Ramroop, his conductor.
Attorney-at-law Ms. Deborah Kumar represented the accused and requested reasonable bail. She stated that her client is not a flight risk.
The lawyer added that her client cooperated fully with the police and that the accident involved three vehicles. She said it is very unfortunate that her client lost an excellent employee and a good friend.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, objected to bail, and informed the court that the accused was speeding, lost control of the vehicle and hit two other vehicles,     which were at a standstill after they had just been involved in an accident.

Telford said drivers continue to ignore the many campaigns by the police, which is being done in an effort to curb the road carnage.
The accused was remanded to prison and the matter was transferred to another court for June 8.
The minibus conductor was decapitated in the accident at Conversation Tree along Rupert Craig Highway, Greater Georgetown, around 10:30 h on May 28.
His skull was crushed and he died before reaching the Georgetown Public Hospital. Ten others were injured.
