The students of the Guyana Karate College (GKC) led by Aiya Wong had a successful debut at the Guyana Karate Federation (GKF) national championships which was held at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), and also served as a warm up for the 11th ISKF Pan American Championships which is slated for August 12-15, 2010.
Eight year old Wong who also holds a black belt, led from the front in her first tournament of the year when she took a gold in the female 6-8 years old kata, followed by a silver in the kumite category of the same age group, while her teammate Aaliyah Seeram carried home a bronze in the kata category of the 6 to 8 years old division.
In the male 6 to 8 years old kata, orange belt karateka John Mc Grath carted off bronze medal, while black belt holder and Aiya’s cousin Tashana Wong also had a bronze in the 9-11 female kata, with Joshua Mortley and Yannick Rameshwar winning gold and bronze in the male 9 to 11 kata.
According to senor instructor and vice president of the GKC Sensei Wong, the discipline and dedication of the students brought out the champions in them and although the competition was a challenging one, they were able to achieve much success.
Sensei Wong and other instructors of the college are satisfied with the performance of the students which net them a total of twenty (20) trophies and the GKC would like to thank the parents for encouraging their children to participate in the tournament.
The other results for the GKC were as follows:
Matthew Hurry – bronze medal (9-11); female 12 – 14 years old kata – Amber Low (Silver); female 12-14 – kumite Simonica Fanfair (silver); male kata – Keymo Alleyne (bronze); male kumite – Shem Wilke and Keymo Alleyne (gold).
Ashley Lopes picked up a silver in the female kata and kumite 15-19 years old category respectively, while Kevin Kellman had a bronze in the kata, Kenny Wong (gold) and Eric Hing bronze in the kumite of the same age group.
