Rain hampering business for Bourda Market stallholders

BOURDA Market stallholders have complained that, despite having to pay increased rents, they are operating under deplorable conditions and incurring losses. Following a heavy downpour of rain yesterday, several of the complainants had to close their businesses to get rid of accumulated water.

Stallholders display some of their damaged goods following a downpour yesterday.

One stallholder, Lynette Jaimangal lamented that the situation has not changed since January and nothing has been done, by the Mayor and City Council (M&CC), to alleviate their problems.
She said Mayor Hamilton Green pointed out that fixing the leak would cost around $15M and the municipality does not have the money now.
Another complainant, Sabrina Jeeboo said, every time it rains her stall is flooded, leaving her with thousands of dollars in damage.

“All the goods wet and yet they come to collect rent today. Paying rent don’t make sense,” she declared.
Jeeboo said she is worried that the leakage would cause electrical problems.
“This is a disaster waiting to happen,” the woman intoned.
One more stallholder, Natasha Johnson said, when this problem occurs, customers are unlikely to visit her section of the market and that hampers business significantly.
Clerk of Markets, Mr. Schulder Griffith could not be reached for a comment yesterday.
