TWO masked, armed robbers forced their way into an East Canje, Berbice house and robbed the occupants of money and jewels.
One of the victims, Vijai Ramjeet, 48, of Lot 40 East Canefield Settlement was asleep shortly after 00:30 h on Monday morning, when awakened by the sound of shattering glass.
His daughter, Indira Latchmanarine, 26, together with her husband, Vajay, who shared another bedroom in their two-flat building, were jolted from their slumber on hearing a window pane falling.
Realising that intruders were inside, Indira screamed: “Thief! Thief!” as the men attempted to gain access to the bedroom.
The bandits threatened to shoot after meeting much resistance and fired a shot which forced Vajay Latchmanarine to open their bedroom door. One of the robbers brandished a gun and the other a knife.
The duo demanded money and jewellery and, after being directed to where the valuables could be found, took a ‘Samsung’ digital camera, a cellphone, a pair of gold bangles, five gold rings including a wedding band and cash.
After collecting the booty, the taller bandit put the husband, who is a distributor of Edward Beharry and Sons products, to lie on the floor and the other placed a knife to his wife’s neck but one urged the next not to harm the couple and they fled, using the window through which they entered.
Indira said her father was wounded on a finger and a joint from it was removed at New Amsterdam Hospital, also in Berbice.
She said they made several telephone calls to Reliance Police Station in Canje but were referred Central Police Station, New Amsterdam.
However, after a friend made a personal telephone call to a policeman, detectives went to the scene, where villagers lamented on the slow response.
