Domestic violence case

One husband remanded on assault charge, other bonded
OMAR Ali, 35, of Lot 16 Broad Street, Georgetown was yesterday remanded to prison on a charge of unlawfully assaulting his reputed wife, Anita Singh, so as to cause her actual bodily harm.

He appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson and pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which said the unlawful assault took place on May 22.
The defendant alleged that the virtual complainant’s ex-husband is the cause of his problem but the woman said Ali beats her constantly and would lock her in their home, away from her children and mother.
Singh said she was, in response to a telephone call, trying to help arrange a relationship between a male friend a female when the defendant became annoyed and hit her about her body.
Singh’s ex-husband, who was also present in Court, claimed that his former mother-in-law called to inform him about what the defendant did to her daughter, whom he still loves and would take back if she becomes a church-goer.
The case will be called again on June 16, pending a probation report on the circumstances.
In another domestic violence case, Winston Lewis, 40, was placed on a bond to keep the peace after he admitted he assaulted his reputed wife, Sharon Hinds.
He pleaded guilty, in the same Court, to having committed the offence on May 21.
The probationer (no address given) confessed that he was under the influence of alcohol when the virtual complainant raised her voice at him and, in anger, he threw a chair at her.
Hinds said she does not wish to proceed with the prosecution as this was the first time Lewis hit her.
Lewis has been bonded for two years
