Accused in land sale scam on $1.5M bail

AHMAD Ali, 36, of Lot 30 Albouys Street, Albouystown, Georgetown, who is at the centre of a land sale scam, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday on three indictable charges.
Particulars of the offences said he:
* between April 23 and 29, 2001, with intent to defraud, conspired together with persons unknown to forge a document, purporting to show that transport was issued to him, for Lot 67 Area ‘Q’ Turkeyen;
* on January 29, 2010, with intent to defraud, uttered, to Tarchand Balgobin, a forgery purporting to show that transport for the same plot was issued to him, knowing it to be false and
* between January 21 and 29, 2010, with intent to defraud, obtained $4.5M from Shanti Davi Balgobin and Tarchand Balgobin, by falsely pretending that he was the transported owner of the Turkeyen place and was in a position to sell it, knowing that to be false.
Defence Counsel Vic Puran told the Court the accused is willing to make restitution and applied for bail to give him time to find the money.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, did not object to the bail grant but requested that the sum be substantial.
Ali was ordered to lodge $1.5M surety until June 8.
