Access to St. Cuthbert’s Mission, via road from the Linden Highway, is sometimes impassable, particularly during the rainy season; but President Bharrat Jagdeo has offered a solution with a promise of $25M to commence a road project. His promise came during a meeting with residents on his second visit yesterday to the Mission, located 50 miles up the Mahaica River.
The Head of State’s proposal was welcomed by loud cheers and applauses from residents who gathered at the St. Cuthbert’s Mission Primary school for a meeting which also included Ministers of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai, Education Shaik Baksh, and Health Bheri Ramsaran.
He told the residents that a lasting solution to the problem is needed and although it may be impossible to pitch the road, he believes that it should be done in such a way that it withstands the next rainy season.
Suggestions were made about applying the same method used to pave the access road to Laluni, but President Jagdeo said the conventional wisdom should come from the community.
“We need to sit together the council, the villagers and the Ministry of Public Works, to see what we can do,” President Jagdeo said.
Several of the residents related stories of vehicles being stranded en route to and from the village. The President said the road is also a necessity for economic activities.
“You need quick and reliable means of transporting your goods from here into the market place which is the coast and Georgetown,” President Jagdeo said. (GINA)
