Police preparing file for DPP in Ramsaroop investigations

THE Police said yesterday they are in the process of preparing a file to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) following investigations into the allegation that former Alliance for Change (AFC) Chief Executive Peter Ramsaroop spied on a teenage tenant through hidden cameras in her apartment. Meantime, Ramsaroop is on $20,000 station bail and is still reporting to Police Headquarters, at Eve Leary, Georgetown.
During a media briefing at her Guyana Times workplace, on Wednesday, Nicole Ming said she was not aware that she was being filmed and was shocked when she realised she was being watched in her rented home since March when she moved there.
She removed from the place recently but the teen, who is employed in the Sales and Marketing Department at Guyana Times, said she is still fearful.
Police, acting on information received, on Tuesday secured a warrant and executed a search at the Lot 261 Forshaw and New Garden Streets, Queenstown premises, owned by Ramsaroop, also in the city.
The building has several apartments but the Police only ventured into the one occupied by Ming, 19, the sole occupant.
She said the search revealed the existence of three covert cameras, one hidden in a clock on a wall that captures a panoramic view of her apartment, another in a radio in the bathroom and a third focusing on her bed.
Ming related that she rented the apartment from Ramsaroop about two months ago and a week ago he requested that she leave her keys on her way out as he had to fix an electrical problem.
She said, on her return, she observed an instrument on the wall with a light flashing.
Ming also stated that, two weeks ago, she had replaced a battery in the clock in which one of the cameras was found and it was not there then.
She feels Ramsaroop may have been recording her and the Police became suspicious that he may be in possession of pornography and distributing it.
Consequently, the police also searched Ramsaroop’s office at Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara and seized two computer hard drives and a digital video recorder from his house.
Ramsaroop has denied all the allegations and indicated, in a written statement, that he previously used the Ming apartment as an office for employees and installed cameras, all of which he did not remove when he rented it to Ming.
Minister of Home Affairs, Mr. Clement Rohee denied, at a press conference Tuesday, that the Police raid at Ramsaroop’s Queenstown property on Monday was  politically motivated in any way.
He maintained that the Police were just doing their job an acted in accordance with the law.
Rohee said he was briefed on the matter and Ramsaroop, nor anyone else, is above the law.
