THE announcement by President Jagdeo of government’s intention to open a biodiversity centre is yet another demonstration of his unswerving commitment to climate change and the green crusade. Such a centre is most relevant, given the untold quantum of flora and fauna that exists in this nation. It will also add to our fledgling science development and will open new vistas for students in general. lt can be described as a facilitator for enhancing this nation’s contribution to environmental studies and research. I have no doubt that President Jagdeo will ensure that such an institution will be staffed with the best facilities and personnel that can be procured. The nation and by extension, humanity will benefit greatly from the scientific data that will emanate from such a centre. Truly, Guyana’s economic development in keeping with the brilliantly conceived Low Carbon Development Strategy will be assured with this planned institution.
And by the way, the wholesale boycott of Friday’s ceremony at the National Convention Centre, by the parliamentary opposition has not gone unnoticed, and describes their selfish and anti nationalist postures. I am certain that they were invited. It has to be spite, or a clear attempt at trying to embarrass the honoured champion. Well, they failed! Their numbers are few, so, they would not have been missed.
