Guyana to participate in Caribbean/US Security Dialogue

…improved law enforcement cooperation, reducing illicit drug trafficking on agenda
Guyana will be participating at the inaugural Caribbean/United States Security Cooperation Dialogue to be held in Washington on May 27, 2010, represented by Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee and a delegation from the Guyana Embassy in Washington.

This was initiated among CARICOM Heads of Government and the United States where a decision was taken to convene the meeting where all Ministers of National Security and in Guyana’s case, the Ministry of Home Affairs, would be involved.
Minister Rohee, at a media briefing at his office, disclosed that three substantive issues will be discussed at that meeting which include measures to substantially reduce illicit trafficking, advanced public safety and security, and to promote social justice.
With regard to the issues of reducing illicit drug trafficking, attention will be given to maritime domain awareness which promotes increased awareness of interdiction of illicit trafficking in narcotics.
Emphasis will also be placed on improved law enforcement cooperation and capacity, while also addressing crime prevention by focusing on youths and other vulnerable populations in each country.
