Being cognizant that education is pertinent to the growth and development of an individual, as well as the country, Government has been carrying out campaigns to incorporate truants in the school system.
One of the recent communities to benefit from the truancy campaign is Bartica, Region Seven, where 23 school aged youths were picked up between the target areas of Byderabo and Bartica/ Potaro Road.
The team responsible for this campaign included Regional Probation Officer Jocelyn Gomes; Representative of the Women’s Affairs Committee and Counsellor Khan; Welfare Officers Zulfikar Hack and Mareilyn Wyatt; Nurse Nichola Anderson; Police Officer Sears; Regional Information Officer Cianna Persaud; and a member of the Bartica Policing Group.
A release from the Region has noted that two warning letters were issued to serious cases by the welfare officers and two cases were referred to the probation officer for further action.
It was decided that checks will be made to ensure that the children are attending school to further their education in accordance with the response of parents to the various officers.
Coming out of the campaign, parents and children were educated on the importance and seriousness of child welfare through counselling at the Bartica Research Centre, One Mile Bartica/Potaro Road.
