At the celebratory ceremony held last Friday at the Guyana International Conference Centre to honour President Jagdeo – the UNEP Champion of the Earth – Chairperson of the National Toshaos Council, Ms Yvonne Pearson, extolled the qualities of the President.
Speaking “on behalf of the National Toshaos Council, and all the Amerindian peoples throughout the length and breadth of Guyana,” Ms Pearson congratulated the President on his being conferred with “the UN’s highest award for environmental leadership in recognition of (his) unwavering effort in combating climate change and in developing and presenting to the world a model on low carbon development.”
She expressed sincere thanks to the President, on behalf of her people, for the donation of his US$40,000 monetary prize to the Amerindian communities.
To demonstrate their support and appreciation to the President for his commitment to working with Guyana’s first peoples to improve their lives, and that of all Guyanese, the National Toshaos Council made a special presentation of a hand-carved sculpture made from wood.
Pledging to the President continuing support, cooperation and participation for the promotion of awareness and education of Amerindians “with respect to the objectives of our country’s Low Carbon Development Strategy,” Ms Pearsons said that the gift to the President from her organization and all Amerindians is a representation of their continued commitment to working with the Government to bring improvement to the lives of the Amerindian people.
Ms. Pearson concluded her presentation by seeking the Lord’s blessings and guidance for the President, even as he guides the nation.
