President Jagdeo to send mission to French Guiana next week

PRESIDENT Bharrat Jagdeo has agreed to send a mission to French Guiana as early as next week following yesterday’s first bilateral meeting with a 16-member French delegation led by Ambassador of France to Suriname and Guyana, Mr. Richard Barbeyron. Ambassador Barbeyron told the Government Information Agency (GINA) after the lengthy meeting that the visit focused on cooperation in various sectors such as rice, the provision of satellite images to help with environmental issues, drug trafficking and maritime piracy.
“We are advancing a lot in the cooperation and in strengthening our links in Guyana. This kind of meeting is historic because it is the first time some people are coming from Paris and the Embassy in French Guiana so we are very happy,” Ambassador Barbeyron said.
Yesterday’s meeting discussed key issues of mutual interest including regional cooperation, security, environmental protection and management and enhancing political dialogue.
Minister of Tourism Industry and Commerce Manniram Prashad who deputised as Foreign Affairs Minister engaged in mutual exchanges with the French delegation during the meeting at the Guyana International Conference Centre (GICC).
Both parties indicated a renewed interest in strengthening existing ties and exploring new areas of cooperation.
