Family requests second post mortem on Bridgette’s body

MOTHER of the deceased Bridgette Gangadin, Mrs. Punarbattie Bharrat, 60, of Lot 9 Annandale, East Coast Demerara, yesterday told the Guyana Chronicle that she is hoping to meet the Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee, today, since the family would like to have a second post mortem done. She explained that the family is not satisfied with the post mortem, which was performed on Monday, May 2, 2010 and even if they have to bring in an expert from overseas, they are willing to do so because they need justice and closure for their loved one.
The grieving woman said that they are expected to bury Bridgette, 30, of Lot 3 ‘E’ Lusignan Public Road, East Coast Demerara, on Saturday, since most relatives came to Guyana from overseas for the funeral and would have to return to their jobs.
The elderly woman told the Guyana Chronicle that there are a lot of speculations regarding her daughter’s death, which is even more painful for the family, because they do not know what transpired.
She admitted that both families have been trying to resolve issues which have arisen following her daughter’s death.
Mrs. Bharrat said, “My son-in-law’s parents were always good to my daughter. They treated her like their own child and even used to try talking with their son to desist from his violent behaviour.”
She explained that her child endured constant beatings and the home was filled with fights and quarrels as a result of her son-in-law’s extra-marital affairs with women, including one who bore him a child.
An autopsy, performed on Monday, May 2, 2010 by Dr. Nehaul Singh, established that the mother of three died from a fractured skull.
It was also found that her injuries were caused when a motor vehicle wheel crushed her head.
The woman’s body was found on the roadway at Vigilance on the East Coast Demerara on Sunday morning.
In a press release issued previously, Police said they were investigating the suspected murder of the victim, who was discovered at about 02:25 hrs Sunday on the verge of Vigilance Public Road with suspected marks of violence.
The release said initial investigations led to the arrest of her husband, Daveanand Gangadin, who is in custody.
His mother-in-law, Punarbattie Bharrat,  told the Guyana Chronicle that her daughter had been abused since she was married at age 14.
She said her daughter had been beaten as recently as a week ago over a triangular affair in which her husband is involved.
According to her, numerous reports were made to Vigilance Police, who would lock up the perpetrator for a day and then release him.
The latest incident, said Gangadin’s sister, Natasha Bharrat, happened after the couple had gone to visit friends at Enmore and Enterprise, also on East Coast Demerara, and returned home.
They had a fight over a cell phone call that Daveanand Gangadin received and again left home in a Canter truck, after which she was killed, the sibling told this newspaper.
