OMESH Mahadeo of Wash Clothes, Mahaicony was on Monday granted $160,000 bail after he appeared at the Mahaicony Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Haymant Ramdhani, charged with simple larceny. He pleaded not guilty to the charge. The allegation states that, between March 7th and April 15th, Mahadeo stole some 200 ducks worth $400,000 from Deonarine Persaud, who was not present in court.
Mahadeo, who was represented by Attorney-at- law Rishi Kissoon, in his bail application, told the court that his client is gainfully employed as a labourer, has a fixed place of abode, a wife of two years, a young child and to date has no previous brushes with law.
However, the prosecutor told the court otherwise, and indicated that none of the ducks were recovered.
Meanwhile, Mahadeo’s mother-in-law Ms. Voilet Kattow, is contending that her son-in- law is innocent of the charge leveled against him.
She told the Guyana Chronicle that her son-in-law was ‘out at sea’ during the dates in which the ducks were allegedly stolen. She also expressed her dissatisfaction in the way the investigative officer carried out the investigation.
She alleged that she was at home in the half nude when several officers came ‘barging in’. At that time, she was also taking care of Mahadeo’s new born baby who was asleep in bed when the officers allegedly ransack the bed with the baby still lying on it. She lamented that since then her grandchild has not had a good night’s sleep.
The elderly woman added that she’s hoping that the matter will soon be resolved in the courts, since Mahadeo nor any family member has $400,000 to pay back to the virtual complainant since that is what he claims the ducks are worth.
Mahadeo is scheduled to return to court on May 17th for statements.
