Woman charged with talking to prisoner granted self-bail

ACTING Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday released Cassandra Tracey Adams on her own recognisance when the latter faced several charges, including unlawfully communicating with a prisoner. The defendant, 22, of Lot 60 West La Penitence, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to all the offences, one of which alleged that, on April 29, in Smyth Street, without lawful authority, she communicated with Randy Morris, who was being detained at Brickdam Police Station lock-ups.
The other allegations against Adams said, the same day, in a public place, she behaved in a disorderly manner, made use of abusive language to Police Constable Rondell Gouveia and resisted him while he was executing his duties as a peace officer.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Euclin Gomes, for the defence, said Adams was cycling along Smyth Street when someone called out to her from the lock-ups and she responded.
The lawyer said an officer in plain clothes warned her to desist from answering the caller but she paid no heed to him, because he spoke to her in unbecoming language and did not identify himself.
Gomes said the policeman then attempted to drag Adams off her bicycle and tore her clothes in the process while also injuring her on various parts of her body.
Gomes said the policeman also touched Adams in places where he should not have, although policewomen were a few feet away and their help could have been requested.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, said nothing in the laws of Guyana precludes a policeman from arresting a female member of the public but it is standard practice that policemen should not search females.
The Prosecutor also claimed that Adams gave the Police a different name to her real one when she was arrested.
He said she was communicating with a man in custody for robbery under arms and pulled off her top during the confrontation.
The Prosecutor said Adams could have simply cooperated with the officer by telling him she was unaware that she could not speak to prisoners.
She has to be back in Court on June 11.
