Remanded on robbery with violence charge

Mark Williams, 30, of 286 West Ruimveldt, was yesterday remanded to prison by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on a robbery with violence charge.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge, which stated that on April 23, he robbed Bibi Khan of one gold chain valued $12,000 and one bangle valued $20,000.
And at the time of the robbery, he made use of personal violence on Khan.
The defendant denied the allegation and claimed that a police beat him about his body and pulled out his locks (hair). He said he was smoking a joint when the police arrested him and when he was taken to the station the police pinned the robbery on him.
However, the virtual complainant was present in court and stated that it was the defendant who robbed her. She said after he took her bangle and chain, he bit her on one of her fingers in an effort to get off a ring. She showed the magistrate the injury.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, objected to bail, and stated that public spirited citizens beat the defendant.
Williams was refused bail and will return to another court on May 7.
