After breaching sea defence…
WAVES from a high tide in the Atlantic Ocean Tuesday afternoon left a 20 feet breach in the earthen embankment along Perseverance foreshore on Essequibo Coast.
The swellings washed away sand and caused flooding in nearby yards, kitchen gardens and the Digicel Tower compound.
The Regional Administration in Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) responded promptly and sealed the big crack, preventing further inundation in the village.
Only recently, at a face the community meeting, villagers had complained to Regional Chairman Alli Baksh about the vulnerable sea defence between La Union and Suddie.
Some lamented that persons were destroying the vegetation by cutting trees along the foreshore, especially in the Perseverance area.
Mr. Baksh said Government is spending hundreds of millions of dollars every year on sea defence structures in the region and the most recent expenditure, of $115M, was to construct a rip rap wall at Zorg to seal another breach.
Meanwhile, Chairman of Good Hope/Pomona Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC). Mr. Showkat Ali reported overtopping at Good Intent, on Tuesday afternoon, as well.
He said several yards were flooded but the water receded quickly but residents are bracing for a recurrence because the tide was expected to be higher yesterday afternoon.
In January, a housing area close to the ocean at Cullen was also flooded by powerful waves which overwhelmed a sand reef embankment and flowed into yards and low-lying houses, forcing some residents to flee to higher ground.
The sea defence, which is very vulnerable in the Devonshire Castle area, also on Essequibo Coast, will be tested during the continuing period of high tides.
