WHILE travelling from the East Coast to the city I notice that there are lots of animals on the road ways. It seems as though the roads have become pastures and animal pens. It is very dangerous driving on the roads and coming into contact with cattle and horses. Sometimes it seems that these animals are fully aware of their surroundings and simply disregard motorists.
Only a few weeks ago, a motorist came into contact with a horse on the East Bank and more recently, a car was seriously damaged after a horse ran onto the road at Good Hope. These animals are becoming a grave danger to motorists in Guyana.
Importantly, authorities should question the owners of the animals. It seems they are the least concerned about their property and the danger they pose. The owners are seemingly not interested about the safety of their animals.
Recently, talks have begun about what people can do with the stray animals they encounter. Guyanese are going to make a good pocket change from the money they get when they take stray animals to the pounds.
Animal owners should be held accountable for the damages their animals have done. It is not fair to motorists when they have to stand the expense for the damage to their vehicles.
The authorities should put more stringent measures in place to address the owners of the animals. They should be held accountable by the law for the animals they leave to traverse the roadways.
