ONCE again, as is customary in Guyana at this time of the year before the construction of the Guyana National Stadium at Providence, rain prevented any play in the final round match of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)/GTM Under-19 Inter-county limited overs tournament, between Demerara and Berbice. The two were set to face each other at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground yesterday in what would have been an exciting affair, with Demerara needing to register a big win to come away with the trophy, following their shocking two-run defeat to Essequibo in their second match.
Early morning rain prevented a ball being bowled in that contest which has been rescheduled for the Police Sports Club (PSC) ground, Eve Leary, tomorrow and should the weather intervene once again, then Berbice who are the defending champions, would walk away with the title once again, having defeated Essequibo in their first round clash.
Also affected was the semi-final action in the Georgetown Cricket Association’s (GCA)/Digicel-sponsored first division Twenty20 competition, which was scheduled to take place at the Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Camp Ayanganna grounds respectively.
At the MSC ground, Everest Cricket Club and Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) were set to face each other while Georgetown Cricket Club, who mauled DCC by 155 runs in their final preliminary round match, were set to face Guyana National Industrial Corporation at GDF. These matches will be played at a later date.
For the second successive week, the GCA has been forced to cancel all competitions being played under their stewardship, until the weather improves.
Meanwhile, the Fish Fry and raffle due for today has been postponed to a later date but tickets will still be valid. (Calvin Roberts)
