“Nothing to Laugh about III” is taking to the Natural Cultural Centre stage this evening and tomorrow evening, with a packed programme of comedy routines.
Signature Productions, a Maria Edwards-Benschop production house, is promising a laugh riot, with seasoned theatre personality, Richard Narine, directing this latest production.
This year’s show, like its predecessors, will feature a compilation of comical skits, songs and poetry which make social commentary and mirror our daily lives, caricaturing some of Guyana’s prominent personalities and featuring the peccadilloes of the famous and not so famous.
Signature has decided to involve students in the production process by staging a competition between the drama groups of various high schools. The production house has already received the green light from the Ministry of Education for this project.
Playwright and Producer Maria Edwards-Benchop said the show for the students will not be a moneymaking venture, but primarily a way in which the production company can work with young talent and make a contribution, however small, to the development of drama in Guyana. According to the young theatrical/television producer, it is a means of introducing young people to an outlet that she was privileged to have since a young child, which she ascribes to being a facilitator to the general development to her creative personality. Only a minimal cover charge will be asked for entrance to this show to assist with overhead costs.
Participating students will be required to submit a humorous five-minute piece written and performed by them.
This year’s production of Nothing to Laugh About, which will be held for the third year running, will initially be held at the National Cultural Centre on the 23rd and 24th of April 2010, and then continue to Berbice, Linden and Bartica for their customary out of town tour.
