Home Affairs Ministry assures of ‘trouble free’ games
– takes note of AFC’s threat of disrupting matches
THE Ministry of Home Affairs said it has noted, with great concern, a particular aspect of a press statement made by the Alliance For Change (AFC), in a publication of one of the local newspapers, of April 14, 2010, under the caption ‘Local Government Elections/AFC Lending Support to Diamond Sugar Workers’ Struggle’.
The Ministry, in a statement, said it’s attention was drawn to the last sentence of the penultimate paragraph of the AFC press statement, which states “Guysuco needs to remember that cricket is coming and it is not only rain that can be disruptive”.
The Ministry said it considers that statement to be a direct threat by the AFC that it is prepared to disrupt the upcoming ICC 20/20 World Cup Championships matches that are scheduled to be played at the Providence Cricket Stadium.
“It is not unusual for the AFC to display such unnationalistic and arrogant conduct,” chastised the Home Affairs Ministry.
“One only has to reflect on the pattern of negative behaviour of that party whenever Guyanese are provided an opportunity to highlight this country, in a positive way,” the ministry said.
It said, of concern, is the apparent desire to mislead sugar workers to serve the narrow and selfish ends of the leaders of that party, and their cohorts.
The Ministry of Home Affairs said it has taken note of this development, and is taking additional steps to ensure that there is no disruption of any of the matches that are to be played here.
Members of public and cricket fans are assured that the security agencies have made arrangements to ensure that their attendance at the games is trouble-free.
