Jailed fraudster also remanded on theft charge

MARK Duncan, 34, of Lot 94 La Grange, West Bank Demerara, was, on Thursday, sentenced to three years imprisonment for fraudulent conversion. He appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson and pleaded guilty, admitting that, on December 24, 2009, being solely entrusted, by Elton George, with 800 cases of one litre and 30 one gallon bottles of water, all valued $106,000, to sell and return the proceeds, he fraudulently converted the money to his own use and benefit.
Duncan, who usually sold water for George, said he committed the offence to meet a gambling debt.
But he denied another charge, which said, last March 15, he stole 19 cases of alcoholic beverages, nine cases of soft drinks, three cases of vodka and other merchandise, all priced at $195,000, belonging to Lana Edwards.
He was refused bail in that case and will face trial on May 21.
