58 treated at New Amsterdam hospital
An early morning accident involving a truck transporting Guyana Sugar Corporation workers and two horses along the Bohemia Road, East Coast Corentyne, has left two persons hospitalized , while fifty eight persons were treated at the New Amsterdam Hospital for trauma and minor injuries, before being sent away. New Amsterdam Hospital CEO, Mr.Leslie Cadagon, told this reporter that Wafeyzeen Karim, 32, a field foreman of Number Three Village, Blairmont, and Fenton Henry , 41, a cane harvester of Number 5 Village, sustained a fractured left tibia, and compound fractured right forearm , respectively.
Both patients were transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital for further medical intervention.
However Satish Tagaraj , 24, who sustained a cervical facture remains a patient in New Amsterdam.
The driver of the contracted vehicle, Lloyd Evans, of 55 Armadale , West Coast Berbice, told the Guyana Chronicle that he was transporting estate workers from Blairmont Estate , West Bank Berbice, to Albion estate , on the Corentyne, when on the northern carriage way, he observed two horses on the opposite side.
According to him, the animals dashed in front the vehicle , resulting in a collision which caused him to lose control, as his lower body was pinned by the steering wheel.
However he was high in praise for the quick assistance received from the employees , resulting in his still being alive.
‘After the steering pinned me , dem boys had to rip out the top of the truck to get me out as the truck was submerged in the water . It could have been worse. Me thank God that no one nah dead.’
Meanwhile , GuySuCo in a press release, stated that the Guyana Sugar Corporation is closely monitoring a group of sugar workers who were injured in the accident.
The incident occurred at 5:15hrs in the vicinity of the Bohemia Primary School on the East Berbice, Corentyne, Public Road.
The driver of the lorry was at the time transporting 49 workers, inclusive of two field foremen, one checker, and 46 harvesters from Blairmont to the Albion Estate.
GuySuCo understands that the lorry was traveling at a normal speed when it hit two horses, causing the driver to lose control, with the vehicle ending up in a trench.
The front of the lorry was submerged.
The injured were transported to the New Amsterdam Hospital, where it was revealed that field foreman Karim suffered from a broken leg and harvester Fenton Henry from a broken rib.
Both persons have been admitted to the medical institution.
The other workers who were affected by minor cuts and bruises were treated and subsequently sent home.
Officials of the Corporation were present at the hospital monitoring the situation and stand ready to provide whatever assistance is needed.
GuySuCo regrets this unfortunate incident and sincerely wishes those affected a quick recovery, the release said.
