GUYANA’S first medallist at the CARIFTA Swimming Championship, Jessica Stephenson, snatched another gold, this time in the Girls’ 13-14 100 metres breaststroke on Tuesday evening at the swimming facility at Jamaica’s National Stadium in Kingston. Stephenson swam a winning time of 1:16.32 ahead of Barbados’ Deandre Small (1:17.40) and Evita Leter of Suriname (1:18.88) who finished third.
The Land of Many Waters finished with three medals, all of which were won by Stephenson. She swam her way into the local history books when she won the 200m breaststroke on the opening day of 25th staging of the competition.
The always smiling Stephenson went on to win bronze in the Girls’ 13-14 50m breaststroke and her heroics ensured that Guyana did not return home empty-handed since none of the other competitors was able to get a podium spot.
Of the 19 countries that participated, Guyana finished 10th overall with three medals while Trinidad and Tobago copped a whopping 94 medals (46 gold, 31 silver, 17 bronze), followed by Barbados who secured 48 medals (20 gold, 21 silver, 7 bronze) and the French Colony Guadeloupe with 47 (8 gold, 19 silver, 20 bronze).
