The name Jagan has become etched in Guyana’s history

PLEASE allow space for my humble thoughts of two great people I admire, respect and follow.
The month of March has become historic and the name Jagan is forever etched in the history of Guyana. The life and works of the Jagans will be celebrated for a long, long time.
I am fully persuaded in my mind that these two champions of the working class of Guyana has made an impact in one way or another on every Guyanese  at home and abroad.
Comrades Janet and Cheddi were truly examples of “the twin shall become one”. Together they served family, friends and the masses exceedingly well up until death, they did part.
After returning from the United States, where he met his wife, Cheddi and Janet in 1947 strengthened their struggle and vision by structuring the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) the harbinger of the Peoples Progressive Party. At the grave side of the Enmore martyrs, overcome by indignation, Cheddi made a silent pledge in 1948 to fight for the liberation of the Guyanese people. There was no turning back.
Served as the first premier in Guyana in 1953 the British suspended the constitution after one hundred and thirty days and dethroned the Jagans. The people voted again for the Jagans in 1957. In the early 1960s the constitution was this time gerrymandered to remove the Jagans from office.
After 28 years in the wilderness, preaching working class unity, organising and mobilising the masses, the Jagans were again favoured by the people in 1992 when the first post independence democratic election was held and the indomitable Cheddi Jagan was again elected the first democratic president of Guyana.
His death in 1997, saw Guyanese of all ethnicity united in the largest of numbers ever to mourn the passing of a true champion of the people. For seven days the country remembered and celebrated his life. Even the then President of the USA, Bill Clinton promulgated in his message to the world “A champion of the poor has passed.”
The Jagans legacy continued when Janet Jagan was elected as the first woman president of Guyana in the 1997 elections. Demitting office for health reasons in 1999, Janet continued her service to the people until her passing in March 2009.
The month of March is for the Jagans and comrade Boyo too.
Long live Cheddi and Janet Jagan.
