Wounded burglary defendant gives different version about shooting

ROGER Bunbury, 39, of Lot 93 ‘E’ North Sophia, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to a break and enter and larceny charge yesterday and Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson put him on $70,000 bail. He is alleged to have, on March 17, broken and entered the storeroom of Deoram Singh and stolen one pressure washer valued $300,000, one grass cutter worth  $95,000, a welding plant priced at $150,000, two batteries costing $300,000 and a $175,000 chainsaw, in booty with a total value of $5.3M.
But the defendant told the Court he saw the virtual complainant and another person harassing a female and, after he intervened on her behalf, Singh drove behind him and fired shots while telling him to run.
Bunbury displayed four gunshot wounds on his body in the courtroom and said they were inflicted by Singh, who was under the influence of alcohol at the time.
Singh had a different version of how the shooting took place. He said he saw Bunbury in his yard and, after he shot at him, he jumped over the fence and packed the stolen things into a waiting motor car.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, said the virtual complainant is a licensed firearm holder and wounded Bunbury after seeing him on his premises.
Bunbury, who declared it was impossible for him to remove all that property from Singh’s yard, will make his next appearance, on April 16, in another Court to which his case has been transferred.
